Many of you know the usefulness of portable apps, which you carry around on your thumb drive. Here's one that is so tiny, yet provides more features than many full desktop apps. From the developer:

"Toucan is a small utility allowing you to synchronise, backup and secure your data with more options than the built in suite utilities. It is split up into 7 tabs, allowing you to easily find the function that you want. This version features:

* Four synchronisation modes, copy, update, mirror and equalise.
* Backup and restore in industry standard zip and 7-zip files, with support for complete backups, updating existing backups and differential backups, as well as restoring files from an archive.
* AES-256 encryption using ccrypt
* Command line support, allows you to create a batch file for repeated jobs
* Variables, point to places on you USB drive no matter what its drive letter is."

Dropbox Folder Sync - Easily sync any folder to your Dropbox

I've become a big fan of Dropbox, meaning I make good use of it, and even more lately with the new Android app. But here's a nice add-on that'll make it even more useful. Developer sez:

"Lets you sync any folder outside dropbox using a simple GUI or just Right Click any folder and Select 'Sync With Dropbox.' Moves the original folder to dropbox and creates a symbolic link for the folder using the junction utility(installs automatically with the setup) from Sysinternals. Thus you can access the same folder from two locations."

Synchredible - Sync folders across computers for free

We often find ourselves needing to access files and documents on different machines. When we make changes on one machine, how do we make sure we have the latest one on the other machine, too? Send ourselves the file via email? Transfer it via memory stick? There's a better way. Synchronize automatically! From the developer:

"Synchredible synchronizes your data/folders the easy way: several assistants support you on defining scheduled jobs for data synchronisation and data backup. Network support is integrated for data synchronisation between local area networks (LAN). Synchredible supports both synchronisations in one and two directions. Our software recognizes any changes automatically and creates protocols of new and changed data."

GoodSync - A powerhouse of file syncing and backup

In the pantheon of syncing and backup gods, GoodSync lives among the clouds with the best. I love it for how it plays so well with RoboForm, its close cousin developed by the same company, Siber Systems. I use it primarily to keep my logon info synced between computers, and it does this easily and efficiently, but it can do so much more: It syncs all kinds of files, photos, emails, etc. between various devices and performs backups of same.

GoodSync has a free and a paid version, Pro2. The paid version adds unlimited jobs and file syncing.

SpiderOak - Another free (2Gb) online backup/storage solution

Does backup intimidate you? There's no need for that with applications like this one. With online backup there's no need to decide where you're going to backup to. And this app allows you not only to use it for backup, but also for synchronization, sharing, remote access, and storage. From the site:

"Whether you need to access a document you have stored on a remote server, synchronize data between a Mac, Windows or Linux device, share important business documents with your clients, or just rest easy knowing all of your data is safely, securely, and automatically backed up - SpiderOak's free online backup, online sync and online sharing solution can handle all your needs!

SpiderOak offers a different approach to online backup by combining a suite of services into one consolidated tool - free online backup, synchronization, sharing, remote access, and storage. This difference is further measured in our zero-knowledge privacy policy - the first one ever employed in this setting. Our flexible design allows you to handle data from any operating system (Mac, Windows and Linux) or location (external drives, network volumes, USB keys, etc...) using just one centralized account."
