Unstoppable Internet

Every once in a while, we at Barry's Best like to take a moment to reflect on where we are as an Internet-connected world. The thing about advancing technology is that people generally don't notice the changes, they only notice what's available at the moment, as if each moment in the process is self contained and without relation to any other. But friends, technology is changing quickly, and the rate of change is accelerating.

One of the most dramatic changes we've experienced relatively recently is the ubiquity of the Internet and the proliferation of Internet-connected devices. The change has come upon us so suddenly that we haven't had time to fully assimilate it into our thinking. For example, how many questions have you thought of recently without realizing that you could have it answered instantaneously by simply posing it to your phone? So you sat in miserable ignorance until it finally dawned on you to Google it.

On a recent visit to my sister's home I happened upon an ongoing FaceTime conversation between my brother-in-law and his toddler grandson, who lives with his parents in a faraway state. I was invited to say hello to the little one, so I revealed to him that there was a time not too long ago when people couldn't actually see the people they were talking to on the telephone. Changes.

We're told that by the year 2020 there will be 24 billion Internet-connected devices on our planet. The number is 9 billion right now. How will that explosion change things? Dramatically, I think. Even in parts of our world that aren't connected by fiber optic cable, there are companies like HughesNet Internet (www.hughesnetinternet.net/) that provide the Internet via satellite to rural USA. It's everywhere, virtually, and will be everywhere, literally

So keep your eyes open, friends. Enjoy the apps we bring to you here on this blog, but appreciate the changes, too.
