Rylstim (Windows) - An easy to use, simple screen recorder

The concept itself just about screams, I'm so darn useful!, but the reality, I've found, tends to be far too complicated and buggy. Until now. The concept is, recording what you're doing on your computer screen so that you can share it with others. If someone isn't following what I'm trying to explain over the phone as I try to help with a computer problem, showing them can make everything clear. You can do that by sharing what you're doing as you do it. That's called screen sharing, but what happens if you can't get both of you sitting down at your machines at the same time, or if you want people to be able to refer to something over and over?

That's where screen recording can be awesome. But my experience has been that the software is so big and buggy and hard to use that it makes more sense just to try explaining things on the phone (as frustrating for both people as it can be). Now comes this super-simple application that takes just a couple of clicks to record straightforward screencasts. See an example below (the real video that you'd share is a lot more readable than this one since Blogger has reduced the resolution considerably to save hosting space).

ShowMeWhatsWrong - Screencasting for friends needing computer help

Anyone who's a been using computers for longer than a 3-minute egg takes to cook is going to be asked for help from friends and relatives. That's a general law of physics. The problem lies in those friends and/or relatives being incapable of describing the problem in a way that is even minimally comprehensible to anyone else. Hence the utility of this marvelous invention.

Watch the demo to see how it works.

Screenjelly - Another screencasting app with a Twitter twist

I surely don't need to sing the praises of screencasting apps yet again, do I? Good. But this is a nice, simple one that allows you either to email or tweet your resulting screencast. From the website:

"Screenjelly records your screen activity with your voice so you can spread it as a video via Twitter or email.

Use it to quickly share cool apps or software tips, report a bug, or just show stuff you like.

To start recording, click on the red button. No need to install or download anything!"

BB Flashback Pro - The best way to record your screen I've seen

I posted a brief review of BB Flashback Express here, which is the free version. This post moves up to Pro, the most full-featured of the offerings from Blueberry.

This one is for the individual or company that wants to create first-class screencasts. Some of the features in Pro that you won't find in Express, or even Standard, are:

Export to Standalone EXE
Export to MS PowerPoint

Frame-by-frame video editing
Multi-track audio editing
Smooth out or re-record cursor movements
Speed up and slow down sections of the movie

The software comes with both a recording and an editing package.

A 30-day free trial is available here.

Webinaria - Open source screen recording and sharing

Here's another "better-than-explaining" application that can save your sanity. Rather than trying to explain how to accomplish something you're doing on your computer to someone else - how frustrating that can be! - use this free application and website to record, publish and share it instead.

BB Flashback - A very powerful (but free) screen recording app

One of the most feature-packed, free screen recording applications I've seen. To keep using the free app you only need to register. From the website:

"BB FlashBack can record high frame rate, high quality movies without affecting PC performance, even on lower powered PCs.

Our users have succeeded in recording large animations that other screen recorders struggled with.WebCam Recording Give your movies the personal touch. Make an appearance with a picture-in-picture webcam recording. One click, and BB FlashBack records from the webcam while it records the screen."

ScreenToaster - A no-installation-required way to create screencasts

Not sure I get the metaphor, "toast your screen," but this is a fine way to produce screencasts with audio with nothing to install, It's a completely online service. From the web site:

"ScreenToaster is an online screencast service allowing to capture screen activity. To watch videos : Just click on a video to launch the player. To record videos : Click on "Start recording" or "New recording", start recording using the shortcuts. When finished, add audio and subtitles, describe and tag your video so other users can easily find your screencasts.

Debut Recording Software - Record video from your screen

If you've tried to explain to friend or foe how you did something on your computer, you know how painful the attempt can be. Especially if they don't know anything remotely useful about their computer besides how to turn it on. Well, now you can show them what you did by recording it with Debut. But then they probably won't know how to play the video, so what's the use?

If you'd still like to try, here's a bit more about Debut from their web site:
Debut is a simple, easy to use video recorder that lets you capture video files directly on your PC using a webcam (video camera), or capture device (from video). This PC video capture software can also capture and record almost anything that can be played or displayed on the computer screen. The program saves the video on your hard drive as avi, wmv or many other file types.

Typical Applications:
  • Produce your own videos with captions and effects from your webcam or other video input device directly to your computer.
  • Create "how to" instructional and training videos by capturing screen movements and audio.
  • Capture video presentations such as internal company meetings or announcements for archiving.
  • Record video memos and email to staff or colleagues.
  • Capture instant snapshots from your favorite home videos to save them as jpg files.
This video recording software is completely free.

Get it here.

Jing: Screen Captures and Screencasts Made Easy

Jing Project

I have to tell you, this looks like a fabulous download. Called Jing, the application lets you create and share screen captures (with lots of annotations) and screencasts with simplicity and ease.

I've never created a screencast, but I can easily see how useful they can be. They're great when you need to see how to do something on your computer, and since I offer computer tips and tutorials on my blogs, Jing seems like it will be a fine fit.

Once you've created your screen capture or screencast, all you have to do is click "Share," and you'll have a link automatically added to your clipboard, which you can then paste into an email, an IM, or your blog.

Check it out for yourself from this video tour.
